When Should You Take Your Child to the Orthodontist?
Many parents may wonder what the best age is to take their child to the Orthodontist. While there are many reasons to see an orthodontist, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that your child’s first visit to an orthodontist be no later than age 7, unless an orthodontic problem arises before age 7. Why 7? Usually a child has enough permanent teeth for an orthodontist to evaluate the jaw and developing teeth. This can provide useful information when creating a treatment plan.
Parents may also notice a variety of things that could prompt an earlier orthodontic visit, such as: spacing, protruding teeth, overbites/cross-bites and oral habits. Any of these are a sign that a trip to the orthodontist is a good idea. Orthodontists are trained to spot current or potential problems in your child’s teeth and jaw growth which could alleviate issues in the future. Early treatment gives orthodontists the ability to guide jaw growth, correct poor oral habits (mouth breathing, finger sucking, etc), guide teeth into a more favorable position and more. These early treatments give your child the best opportunity for a beautiful, healthy smile.
If your child is over the age of 7, it is not too late for an orthodontic visit. All patients are unique and the goal of orthodontists is to provide each patient with the best and most appropriate treatment at the most appropriate time.
